A returnee exam (帰国生入試, kikokusei nyūshi) and an English exam (英語入試, eigo nyūshi) are school rounds, and each school writes its own rules. The juku pages below are three different products a family might open while preparing. They were read on 9 October 2026. None of them is an offer of a place at a school.

Sundai's English course for the junior-high exam

Sundai's English specialist department (駿台・英語専門部, Sundai Eigo Senmonbu, sundai-global.jp) publishes a junior-high English course (中学受験英語対策コース). The page says it is for families who want to use English in the junior-high exam. Lessons are private. The steps it prints are a counselling session, a trial lesson, then regular lessons. Counselling can be online or at the school. The page says the counsellor uses the schools you are considering and results such as Eiken (英検, Eiken, the Test in Practical English) to suggest a course. The trial lesson is paid. The page does not print the trial price.

For grades 4 and 5 it describes two strands. One is private lessons in reading and writing after a return to Japan. The other is a four-skills course (英語4技能) for the grammar and composition that the page calls the base of junior-high English, taught alongside Eiken preparation. For grade 6 it says the private lesson is matched to the target school, and it names Shibuya Makuhari, Shibuya Shibuya, Senzoku, Kaijo, Hiroo Gakuen and Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School as examples. Those names are the page's examples of schools the lesson can be built around.

The fee page says tuition depends on the lesson or the package, and that you should ask for the figure. It does publish guide prices for other lesson types, tax included, for 90 minutes: TOEFL or IELTS from ¥20,790, SAT from ¥24,750, Eiken from ¥20,790, a four-skills or study-abroad course at ¥17,160 for teens and ¥16,610 for children, and a made-to-order lesson from ¥20,790. It also says set discounts exist. The joining fee is ¥20,000. It is waived if the child or a family member has studied at a Sundai group school, including in the past, and in some introduction cases. A friend's introduction cuts it to ¥10,000. The page says those waivers are not applied after you have already joined, and they do not stack. Materials are charged at cost, on top of tuition, and explained at joining. Use the guide prices as the published range for those named lesson types. Ask what the junior-high English package itself costs before you sit the paid trial.

What Waseda Academy lists for returnee families

Waseda Academy's grade-4 course page names a returnee specialist, LOGOS AKADEMEIA (ロゴスアカデメイア), and lists dated events. The LOGOS fee page was not opened, so this article has no LOGOS fee. The events on the Waseda page, with the weekdays the page prints, fall in 2026 and early 2027:

What the page lists When
Returnee-exam interview preparation, grades 6 and 9, marked free Saturday 24 October 2026
Talk on English for returnee children, grades 1 to 6, marked free Sunday 8 November 2026
Shibuya Makuhari returnee open mock, second round, grade 6, with a school briefing the same day Saturday 14 November 2026
Rikkyo Ikebukuro returnee last-minute practice, grade 6, marked free Saturday 14 November 2026
Gakushuin junior returnee last-minute practice, grade 6, marked free Monday 23 November 2026 (a public holiday)
Pre-winter course for grade 6, aimed at returnee exams in January and February Monday 30 November to Friday 18 December 2026
Last-minute course for grade 6 Friday 8 January to Saturday 30 January 2027

The same page lists an on-demand seminar for families about to move abroad, covering preparation before the posting, study while away, and the exam after return. It is marked free and aimed at grades 1 to 9. Waseda also lists a winter course under the LOGOS name for December and January. Book on Waseda's site; buildings and formats change.

What SAPIX publishes about returnees

SAPIX's own FAQ says it does not run a separate returnee class. Returnee children use the ordinary course. It holds an information meeting for returnee parents in the autumn, and it says families can ask the building about returnee exams at other times. There is no date or fee for that autumn meeting on the FAQ page. SAPIX's ordinary entry test, monthly tuition and eight-day cooling-off are on its FAQ, and they are the same route the page describes for everyone else.

What to do now

  • If you want school-by-school English lessons, ask Sundai what the junior-high package costs. The fee page's 90-minute guide prices are a different line from "ask us for this course."
  • If you are already in Japan and the exam is this winter, look at Waseda's October-to-January list and book the sitting that matches the school.
  • If you are looking at SAPIX, ask for the autumn returnee parents' meeting and expect the ordinary class, the ordinary entrance test and the ordinary bill.
  • Read the school's own guidelines for who counts as a returnee and which English score it accepts. A juku course does not set that rule.
