Many private junior highs in Tokyo run several exam rounds in early February, and families often apply to more than one school or round. Applying to several is called 併願 (heigan). Each school's guidebook (募集要項, boshū yōkō) sets its own rounds, fees and payment deadlines, and those details decide how a plan fits together.
This article walks through one school's April 2027 guidebook: Hiroo Gakuen Junior High (広尾学園中学校, Minato, Tokyo). Use it to know what to look for in other schools' guidebooks. It is not a rule for other schools.
The February rounds

The school takes 240 students in total, counting its December returnee exam. Rounds 1 to 3 are four subjects (国語 and 算数 at 100 marks each, 理科 and 社会 at 50). The Medical/Science round weights 算数 and 理科. The International-student AG round is Japanese, maths in English, English and a short interview, and needs Eiken grade 2 (英検2級) or equivalent.
Results come out the day after each exam, at the school and online, during set hours only. The school does not answer results by phone or email.
Afternoon exams (午後入試)
An afternoon exam (午後入試, gogo nyūshi) starts after lunch. At this school a child can sit Round 1 on the morning of 1 February and Round 2 that afternoon, or another school's morning exam before Round 2. The gate opens at 14:00 for afternoon rounds. A child who cannot reach the 15:40 start can sit in a separate room that starts at 16:00 with the full time; the family phones the school on the day (03-3444-7271).
Applying late, round by round
Online applications open Sun 10 Jan 2027, 9:00. The exam fee can be paid from Wed 6 Jan 2027, 9:00. Each round closes late:

So a family can see the 1 February results and still add Round 3.

Fees are not refunded. Once you apply, the round and the course cannot be changed.
One payment deadline for every February round
Whichever February round a child passes, the deadlines are the same:
- Entry fee (入学金) ¥388,000 by Tue 9 Feb 2027, 16:00, paid on the school's payment site. It is not refunded.
- School fees by Wed 10 Feb 2027, 12:00.
- Enrolment papers by Fri 12 Feb 2027.
- New-student briefing Sat 20 Feb 2027.
The guidebook says a family that misses a payment, or misses the briefing without telling the school, is treated as having declined the place. When you plan several schools, write each school's payment deadline next to its results time. Paying one school's entry fee to hold a place while waiting for another is a cost you cannot get back here.
Interviews on the international rounds
For the December returnee exam and the International-student AG round, the interview start time is posted on the day and the wait can be long. A child with more than an hour to wait may leave and must be back 15 minutes before the interview. A child who is late for the interview cannot be interviewed. On exam days the school asks that only one parent come along, and there is no parking.
After entry
Monthly fees in the guidebook are ¥54,350 (main course), ¥64,350 (Medical/Science and International SG) and ¥74,350 (International AG), plus ¥16,000 a month held for trips and materials. The school asks for an optional donation of ¥100,000 a unit, two units or more. It notes the 2027 amounts may change.
The school's 2026 information sessions
All need a booking through the form on the school's website: lesson experience days on 13 June and 5 September, a school session on Sat 17 October, and exam-trend sessions on Sun 8 November and Sat 12 December 2026. The school festival (けやき祭) on 3–4 October also needed a booking. Events can change; check the school's website.
What this guidebook does not say
It does not describe a waiting list (繰り上げ合格, kuriage gōkaku). Ask the school before you count on one. No combination of rounds decides a result.
