Vもぎってなに?(株式会社進学研究会)

In the months before the high-school exam, many third-year families in the Tokyo area sit a mock exam run outside school. One of the large sittings is Vもぎ (bui mogi), organised by 進学研究会 (Shingaku Kenkyūkai, the company that also writes 進研 on its pages). The company says it is a mock test for the high-school exam, and that it is only for third-year junior high. First and second years cannot enter.

A mock is a practice paper in a hall, with a result sheet afterwards. It is not the junior high's 評定, and it is not the exam the metropolitan or private school will mark in January or February. The Tokyo private-school association says its December consultation with the junior high does not use deviation scores (偏差値, hensachi) from commercial mocks at all. A Vもぎ score can help you see which papers are weak. It does not move the report card, and it does not bind a school.

Which paper, and what you pay

The company publishes four products. Times below are the ones it prints for the hall, from opening to the end of the sitting.

Paper Who it is built for When Fee, tax included
都立Vもぎ Students aiming at Tokyo metropolitan high schools. From August to January it runs a version closer to the real papers. Every month, June through January 4,900 yen
都立自校作成対策もぎ Students aiming at metropolitan schools that write their own papers. The company names Hibiya, Toyama, Aoyama, Nishi, Hachioji Higashi, Tachikawa, Kunitachi, Shinjuku, Sumidagawa, and Kokubunji. It describes free English writing and maths in which you show the working. Four times, October through January 5,700 yen
県立Vもぎ Chiba prefectural public high schools Every month, June through January 4,900 yen
私立Vもぎ Private and national high schools across the greater Tokyo area Four times, September through December 4,900 yen

The metropolitan paper opens at 7:45 and, on the company's page, ends at 12:50, or 13:30 for the closer-to-the-exam version and for the own-paper version. The private-school paper ends at 11:30. Halls are universities, high schools, and vocational schools. The company says more than 380,000 sittings a year, and 30,000 to 40,000 people a month in the second term. Those are its figures for how busy the halls are, not a pass rate.

On the result, the metropolitan paper prints a judgement for three metropolitan schools and two private or national schools. The own-paper version prints four own-paper schools and two private or national schools. The private paper prints six private or national schools. The company calls this a picture of current work and of the chance of passing the schools you listed. Read that second half as the company's judgement. A school does not see this sheet unless you show it to someone, and the private-school consultation is not allowed to use it as the basis of the talk.

After the sitting, the company says it hands out current exam information at the hall. The personal result is not posted to you. It appears on the member page, as a PDF, on the publication day. For a limited period the site lets you type in different scores and see the school judgement move. That tool is a calculator on the company's model. It is still not an offer.

How to book, and what you cannot undo

There are two doors. A juku enters its own students. A family booking alone joins the free membership, then applies during the window for that date and chooses one hall. If the hall is oversubscribed, the company moves people after the window closes. The hall you actually have appears on the member page seven days later. It may differ from the one you clicked. Print the ticket from that page. Nothing is mailed.

After the window you cannot cancel or change the booking. If every hall is full you may have no seat. The fee is not refunded. An absence needs no phone call; the company says it will post the papers later. The result is a PDF on the member page.

Juku term fees are not on these pages. The Ministry of Education's Reiwa 5 learning-cost survey (a correction is noted on 16 January 2026) publishes household totals in a PDF, and those totals are not copied here. The price you can act on for this mock is 4,900 yen, or 5,700 yen for the own-paper sitting.

What a foreign family should use it for

The papers follow the Japanese exam the company is imitating. A student still learning to read exam Japanese will see that in the score. The score describes this paper. Use the metropolitan paper for the February metropolitan exam, and the own-paper sitting only when the target school is one the company lists. The private paper answers the private exam.

Take the sheet to the homeroom teacher and ask which subject lost the marks. The school's 評定, a private high school's December consultation, and this sheet are three records. The consultation, on the private-school association's rule, does not use this deviation score. Only the school you apply to can offer a place.

What goes wrong

Paying for every month from June without a reason is a family choice, not a rule. The company runs a paper every month in that stretch for the metropolitan version. It does not say a student must sit all of them.
