Rules for Chuo only. Other wards differ: check with your ward office.

A place at a private, national or metropolitan junior high does not, by itself, tell your ward where your child will be in April. Chuo ward's page for this, posted 3 Aug 2026, says the board has to know the school of every compulsory-age child who lives in the ward. The page asks you to file. If the ward cannot tell where the child is, it says it may check, and may share information with child-welfare offices.

教育委員会では、学校教育法施行令に基づき、区内に住所を有する義務教育学齢児童・生徒の就学先を把握する必要があります。

This is Chuo's rule. Another ward has its own form and its own desk. The autumn survey about which junior high you hope for is a different Chuo page, covered in the grade 6 survey article. This page is the one you use once a school outside the ward junior high is actually going to take your child.

What you file in Chuo

The page sends you to a LoGo form. Before you open it, have a PDF ready. The attachment is either a document that shows the child is already enrolled (a copy of a student ID, or a certificate of enrolment) or a document that shows the child will enter (an admission permit, 入学許可書, nyūgaku kyokasho, or something like it).

File at the school-affairs desk if you need a person rather than the form:

  • 中央区教育委員会事務局 学務課学事係
  • Tsukiji 1-1-1, main building, 6th floor (〒104-8404)
  • 03-3546-5512, 03-3546-5513, 03-3546-5514
  • The counter is open 8:30 to 17:00

The page lists no fee for this filing.

If the child will attend school overseas while the residence record stays in Chuo, or will attend an international school, the same page says the procedure depends on the situation. It tells you to ask the desk. Do not assume the LoGo button for a Japanese private school covers an international school.

Where the permit comes from

The ward can only attach a permit the new school has issued. Schools issue it at different moments.

Hosei University Daini Junior High, in Kawasaki, prints three different papers and says they are handed out at the new-student orientation. Its April 2027 guidebook schedules the first orientation at 14:00 on 13 Feb 2027, for parents (the child may come). The papers are:

Paper Who keeps it
入学許可書 The family
入学通知書 You submit this to the elementary school the child is leaving
就学承諾書 You submit this to the board of education

A Chuo family who passed Hosei would use the permit, or the consent form, as the PDF on Chuo's LoGo form, and would still give the elementary school its own notice. A family who lives outside Chuo takes the consent form to their board and asks what that city wants filed. This article has not read Kawasaki's or Yokohama's version of the Chuo page.

Yamate Gakuin says the pass letter and the admission permit are printed from the characters you typed on the application. If you substituted a simpler kanji because the site could not store the real one, that simpler kanji is what the permit will show. Sort the name with the school before you pay, because the ward will read the permit you attach.

Hosei does not hand over those papers until enrolment is complete. Enrolment there means you have collected the packet at the school and paid ¥350,000 on miraicompass (¥300,000 plus ¥50,000) inside the window for your round. Miss either half and the guidebook says you are treated as having declined. The ¥300,000 is not returned. The ¥50,000 can be returned in May if the decline form is in the office by 16:00 on 31 Mar 2027, or postmarked that day. The first-year total printed in the book, ¥1,176,222, is labelled as the 2026 figure. The 2027 breakdown is on the school site, not in that line.

What to do, and by when

  1. Pay the new school inside its window. Until you do, you may have a result and no permit.
  2. Collect the papers the school names. At Hosei, that includes a copy for the elementary school and a copy for the board, at the 13 Feb orientation.
  3. In Chuo, submit the LoGo form with the PDF. The page says to do this so the ward can see where the child is going. It does not print a calendar day of its own. File as soon as you have the PDF, and ask the desk if you are close to April.
  4. Give the elementary school the notice addressed to it, so the teacher is not still preparing the local junior high's paperwork only.
  5. If you had also asked Chuo for a different ward junior high, the grade 6 article's page tells you to withdraw that request once the outside place is confirmed. This filing page does not repeat those autumn dates.

What goes wrong

The ward still has your child on the local junior high list, because nobody filed. Chuo's page is explicit that a child it cannot place may be looked for, and that welfare offices may be told. The other failure is filing too early, with no PDF, or filing the private-school form for an international school the page has told you to ask about. A third is a permit in a substitute kanji the ward's clerk cannot match to the residence record. And a family that skips Hosei's orientation misses the hour when the three papers are handed over.

What to do now

  • Ask each school you might pass: on what date is the admission permit issued, and which paper is for the elementary school and which is for the ward.
  • If you live in Chuo, bookmark the LoGo page and the school-affairs phone numbers above.
  • If you live in another ward, phone that ward's school-affairs desk now and ask what it wants after a private-school yes. Do not send them Chuo's form.
  • Keep the elementary school teacher's name handy for the week you receive 入学通知書.

Your child's dates, not the general ones

Add your child and ward. The timeline does the rest.
