Kanagawa has public six-year schools that admit children at the end of elementary school with an aptitude test (適性検査, tekisei kensa) and a school report (調査書, chōsasho). They are not the local junior high, which takes the children of its district with no exam. For April 2027 there are two prefectural secondary schools, two Yokohama municipal schools, and one Kawasaki municipal school. Each outline below was published for this intake. Tokyo's ten public combined schools are a different system, with a different residence rule.
Who may apply, and to how many
You apply to one of these schools. The prefecture says you choose Sagamihara or Hiratsuka:
Yokohama and Kawasaki each say they will not take an application from a child who has applied, or plans to apply, to another public secondary school or another attached combined junior high. Phone the board before you file two public applications.

At the prefecture and at Kawasaki the child is, in principle, born from 2 Apr 2014 to 1 Apr 2015, and due to finish elementary school by 31 Mar 2027, or a Japanese school abroad that MEXT treats as equivalent, or six years of school in another country. Yokohama's two outlines state the schooling rule and the address rule. They do not repeat those birth dates. Read the outline of the school you will name.
Minami is the one school that can take a child from outside Yokohama. The child and the guardian still live in Kanagawa. The principal of the elementary school the child attends now has to agree, and Minami's principal has to accept the child. Those places are capped at 30 percent of the 160. Science Frontier's district is Yokohama city, and its outline does not add that outside-city cap. Kawasaki requires the address in the city and that commuting from Kawasaki after entry is certain.
A family moving in by 1 Apr 2027 can be treated as already resident, if the superintendent approves. At Science Frontier and at Kawasaki the window is 1–18 Dec 2026, weekdays 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00. A late filing is possible if the superintendent agrees (Yokohama until noon on 4 Jan; Kawasaki until the morning of 5 Jan). Bring proof of the new address and a written promise to decline the place if the move is cancelled. Kawasaki also wants the current principal's comment, unless that really cannot be obtained.
The day, and the report
The exam is the same calendar day at all five schools, Wednesday 3 Feb 2027. You cannot sit two of them.
Yokohama's two schools gather at 8:50. Paper I is 9:15–10:00 (reading documents, figures and tables, and writing a response). Paper II is 10:40–11:25 (scientific and mathematical; Minami also asks you to explain the result). The venue is the school unless the numbers force another room.
Kawasaki gathers at 8:35. Paper I, 9:00–9:45, reads figures and data in social, scientific and mathematical settings. Paper II, 10:20–11:05, is reading, writing and an essay. Bring the ticket and writing tools. The photo is 4 cm by 3 cm, taken in the six months before you apply.
The prefectural outline ranks children on the test plus the report and takes the top 160. It leaves the length of the papers to a later notice. Hiratsuka's clock is not printed in that outline.
Every one of these schools also wants the elementary school's report, posted by registered mail with the application. The web form is open 21 Dec 2026 through 4 Jan 2027. Papers are posted 5–7 Jan 2027. At the cities, a postmark on 7 Jan still counts. Once posted, the papers are not sent back. A child who skips part of the test is not in the ranking. If the report is incomplete, the outlines say the school uses the test and whatever other material it has.
Children of a parent who moved from overseas, or who returned, in principle within three years of 1 Feb 2027, sit the same test. If the superintendent agrees that the ordinary test would be too difficult, an adjustment can be approved. For the prefectural schools the outline reserves that adjustment for a child who needs Japanese-language teaching, and says the method is set out separately. File the request with the application. It is not automatic. A disability adjustment is a separate form, also filed with the application, and it is also an approval, not an automatic change.
After the result
A pass still has a pledge to file. Miss it and the offer is cancelled (at Kawasaki, the principal may cancel it).

The next child is asked whether they want the place
Decline with the school's form as soon as you know. The city outlines set an exam fee separately and do not return it. They do not print the yen amount, and the prefectural outline read here does not either. Ask the board before you pay.
What goes wrong
A second public application, a move-in packet after the printed window, or an adjustment that was never filed.
What to do now
If you live outside Yokohama and want Minami, ask your elementary principal about the consent.
Your child's dates, not the general ones
Add your child and ward. The timeline does the rest.
