Sitting a private elementary entrance exam is what families call お受験 (o-juken, "the exam"). It is a choice, not a step every family takes. This article walks through one school's own admissions page so you can see what saying yes involves. The school is Seikei Elementary (成蹊小学校) in Musashino, Tokyo. Other schools set their own dates and papers.
It happens in the autumn before entry
For April 2027 entry (2027年度新1年生), the child had to be born 2 April 2020 – 1 April 2021. That is the child in the last kindergarten year (年長, nenchō) now. The page lists 112 places (56 boys, 56 girls).

Registration for this round closed on 1 October 2026. The page does not show the round for April 2028 entry. Do not assume next year uses the same days.
What the 募集要項 asks for
- Online registration on the "miraicompass" site: the child's and the parents' details, and which exam you are choosing.
- An exam fee (受験料, juken-ryō) of ¥30,000 (受験料：30,000円). The page says that once paid, an entry with wrong details cannot be cancelled or refunded.
- A family survey and family-photo sheet (家庭調査書・家族写真台帳), printed from the back of the guide on plain white A4, both sides.
- The child's assessment and a parent interview, on days in the same week.
Questions the page raises before you say yes
- Can you act in late September? Registration was open for four days. A family that starts thinking about it in October has missed this round.
- Can a parent come on a weekday in early November? The interview is on one of Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 November.
- Can you pay within about a day and a half? Results came out at 14:00 on 5 November and payment closed at 23:59 on 6 November. The amount is on the school's fees page (納付金), not on this page.
