A national elementary school (国立小学校, kokuritsu shōgakkō) is attached to a national university. The University of Tsukuba Elementary School (筑波大学附属小学校) published its notice for April 2027 entry on 1 September 2026.
The notice says the school exists for experimental and demonstration research on elementary education. It says it is not a school that prepares children specially for junior-high entrance exams, and asks families to apply on that understanding.
Who can apply
- Born 2 April 2020 – 1 April 2021.
- On the application day, 13 October 2026, the child lives with a parent or guardian in one of these areas: Tokyo's 23 wards, Nishitokyo city (西東京市), or Wako city in Saitama (埼玉県和光市).
- After entry, the family's base of life stays inside that area and the child lives with the family.
- A temporary change of address for the exam (寄留, kiryū) is not accepted at all, the notice says.
A family living in Kawasaki or Yokohama is outside this area.
The school takes about 128 first graders, boys and girls in roughly equal numbers.
The steps (all 2026)

The assessment results come out the day before the third-round lottery, and candidates are named the day after it. A child who gets through the assessment still goes into that lottery.
Other things the notice says
- The school does not answer phone questions about the entrance exam.
- If a disability means the child needs special consideration in selection or in school, tell the school before applying. The university's attached-schools bureau then holds a consultation. The window for that was 7–18 September 2026, weekdays 9:00–16:00. It has closed.
- Dates can change for infection control; the notice names influenza. Check the school website before you apply.
The notice does not describe the assessment, the exam fee, or what goes in on 19 November. Those are in the paid guide, on sale until 16 October 2026.
This notice does not promise a place.
