Meguro ward (目黒区) mails a school entry notice (就学通知書, shūgaku tsūchisho) for every child of the age to start elementary or junior high school on 1 April 2027. The ward plans to send it in mid-December 2026 (令和8年12月中旬（予定）).
What the notice is
It names the ward school for the school zone of your address. The ward calls it the designated school (指定校, shiteikō). You hand the notice in at that school on the day of the entrance ceremony, so keep it safe.

What you do depends on where your child is going
- The designated school. The ward plans to send guidance around mid-December 2026.
- A national, metropolitan or private school (国立・都立・私立), or a combined secondary school. Once the place is decided, hand in that school's letter of acceptance (入学承諾書 or 入学許可書, nyūgaku shōdakusho; the name differs by school). Use the ward's online page for private-school procedures, or take or mail the original to the School Affairs desk (学校運営課学事係) or a nearby area service office (地区サービス事務所). The Eastern area office does not take it.
- Moving before April, to enter the designated school for the new address. Guidance is planned around mid-December 2026.
- Living in an adjustment zone (調整区域, chōsei kuiki). You can apply to change the designated school. The page lists the zones block by block. For Ōokayama Elementary (大岡山小学校), the ward plans to answer around late January 2027, after it sees how many children are due from that school's own zone.
- An older brother or sister still at another ward school in fiscal 2027. You can apply to change to that school.
- An international school in Japan. Hand in a paper that shows the child is entering, in place of the letter of acceptance, the same way as in item 2. A school abroad, or anything else: guidance is planned around mid-December 2026.
The parents' briefing
Each school holds a briefing for parents of new pupils. Go to the one at the school your child will enter. The page says to check the school's website first because times can change, not to come by bicycle, and to bring your own indoor slippers, a shoe bag and something to write with. When the schedule appears is not clear on the page; check each school's website.
