Tokyo's public combined junior-and-senior high schools (都立中高一貫校, officially 都立中等教育学校 and 都立中学校) take applications for April 2027 mostly online (インターネット出願, intānetto shutsugan), with paper documents mailed afterwards. This article walks through the paperwork in the Tokyo board of education's guideline for that intake. Each school's own guidebook (募集要項) can add to it.

You may apply to one of these schools only (都立中学校を志願する者は、1校に限り出願することができる。), and not also to Chiyoda ward's Kudan secondary school. Where a school runs a special round, a child may enter both its special and its general round. Each round needs its own application and fee, but one school report covers both. A child who passes the special round cannot sit the general one.
Step by step (child at a Tokyo elementary school)
- Enter the child's details on the application website (出願サイト) and print the application form (入学願書, nyūgaku gansho).
- Take the printed form to your elementary school. The principal checks the details, checks that the attached photo is your child and that your child is eligible, and stamps the school seal (公印).
- Pay the exam fee (入学考査料) of ¥2,200 on the website before you mail the documents. It is paid per round.
- Get the school report (報告書, hōkokusho, form 3) from the elementary school. Its teachers write it, not you. It comes in a large envelope (角2封筒), unfolded and sealed, addressed to the combined school's principal. Send it as it is.
- Mail everything by 特定記録郵便 (tokutei kiroku, recorded mail) to the post office the school names, held there for the school (郵便局留). It must arrive within the document period. A postmark is not enough (書類提出期間に必着).
- Print the exam ticket (受検票, jukenhyō) when the school issues it on the website. The sample form says to keep it: you need it to enrol and to ask for your scores (入学手続をする時及び得点の開示請求の時に必要なのでなくさないこと).
For the special round, the list adds a statement of reasons for applying (志願理由書), a record of activities (活動実績報告書), and documents that prove an outstanding ability. Whatever the school's own guidebook asks for is also required.
On the application form
- Write the child's name exactly as on the residence record (住民票に記載されているとおりの氏名). If your child is a foreign national with a registered alias (通称名) on the residence record, write the legal name and then the alias in brackets. The exam ticket can then show only the alias.
- The guardian's name must be handwritten (保護者氏名は必ず自署してください。).
- The photo box on the sample says front-facing, upper body, no hat, 4 cm × 3 cm (正面上半身脱帽 (4cm×3cm)).
- If you will move before the school year starts, give the new address in the box for it.
- A child not at a Tokyo elementary school does not need the school name, principal, phone number or seal on the form.
What the school report contains
The elementary school fills in: the enrolment record, the subject grades (each viewpoint as A, B or C, and an overall 3, 2 or 1 per subject), the integrated-study record, special activities, behaviour, and an overall comment. Grade 6 is assessed as at 31 December 2026. A child who came back on or after 1 April 2025 from a local school abroad gets only the parts the school can fill in, with a note explaining the rest.
If you cannot apply online
Contact the school first. Documents still go by recorded mail. The fee is paid with the school's payment slip, and the receipt is stuck to the back of the application form. The exam ticket comes by post.
The returnee and foreign-resident round
Two schools run a separate round for returnees and recently arrived foreign residents: Tachikawa Kokusai secondary school (立川国際中等教育学校) and the junior high attached to Hakuo High School (白鷗高等学校附属中学校). That round is paper and in person only: documents are brought to the school on 8 January 2027 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) or 12 January 2027 (9 a.m.–noon). Mail is not accepted. The fee is paid by payment slip, and the exam ticket is handed over when you apply. The exam is on 25 January 2027.
Your child's dates, not the general ones
Add your child and ward. The timeline does the rest.
