If you are worried about how your child is learning or getting on at school, Yokohama's board of education has one place to ask: the Special Needs Education Center (特別支援教育総合センター, tokubetsu shien kyōiku sōgō sentā) in Hodogaya ward. It runs two kinds of consultation.
Two consultations
| School-entry consultation (就学相談, shūgaku sōdan) | Education consultation (教育相談, kyōiku sōdan) | |
|---|---|---|
| For | Children about to start elementary school | Children already at school, elementary grade 1 to junior-high grade 3 |
| How to apply | Mail the application form to the center, or apply online through the city's e-application system (registration first) | Through your child's school. The school gives you the form |
For the fiscal-2026 school-entry consultation, the page says applications are for children born 2 April 2020 – 1 April 2021.
School-entry deadlines
Applications must arrive by:
- end of June to discuss a special-needs school (特別支援学校, tokubetsu shien gakkō);
- end of July to discuss an individual support class (個別支援学級, kobetsu shien gakkyū) or a resource room (通級指導教室, tsūkyū shidō kyōshitsu).
You can still apply after July for an individual support class or a resource room, but the page says the wait may be longer. A family moving to Yokohama can apply at any time of year, and should apply as soon as the move is confirmed.
What the consultation is
Teachers who advise schools (指導主事), education counsellors and staff such as physical therapists talk with you, and a psychological examiner (心理判定員) gives a developmental test (発達検査). The center then judges which place to learn suits the child. Sessions are on weekdays (not public holidays or the New Year break), starting at 9:30 or 13:10, and take about two hours.
There is an English application form and an English leaflet on the page. Check your child's temperature before you go; if they have a fever or are unwell, ask to change the day.
