High school, year 2 (高校2年)
The second year of high school is when the 文系/理系 (humanities or science) split takes effect, and the year to learn how university entry works before the final year's deadlines. For the child it is often the busiest year for clubs and school events, and the last full year before they become a legal adult.
Age 16–17
What school expects this year
High school: credits, moving up a year, and the 文系/理系 choice made in year 1
Classes now follow the side chosen last year, switching is hard, and every 単位 (credit) still depends on attendance as well as marks.
Ask the teacher: Is my child on track for every credit this year, and does the side they chose still suit them?
Eiken dates and fees for an individual applicant in the 2026 session list
An Eiken grade is one of the certificates universities can read, and individual registration has its own sessions and windows each year, apart from any school sitting.
Body and mind this year
"How to send an SOS": what schools teach, and the lines a child or parent can call
Clubs, marks, relationships and the choices ahead all weigh on the middle year, and the free lines in the article are for teenagers as much as for children.
At home: Your child's marks fall suddenly, or they drop a club or friends without saying why.
Sleep and the daily rhythm by age: the national sleep guide and the 早寝早起き朝ごはん campaign
In high school nobody sets the bedtime any more: clubs, アルバイト (a part-time job) and late screens set it instead, and the national guide still gives a teenager more hours than an adult.
At home: Your child sleeps through the alarm, is late for first period, or naps every afternoon.
Friends, rules and screens
Turning 18 in high school: contracts, parental authority, voting, and what stays at 20
Next year your child becomes a legal adult: a contract they sign will no longer need your consent, and you will no longer be able to cancel it for them.
At home: Your child mentions signing up for something, a phone plan, a gym or a course, without telling you first.
Ask the teacher: Does the school teach contracts and consumer rights before students become legal adults?
Phones, games and social media by age: what the national survey shows and what schools allow
年齢別のスマホ・ゲーム・SNS(青少年のインターネット利用環境実態調査と学校の持込みルール)
With adulthood close, contracts, in-app payments and online side jobs are the new risks, and what a minor can still cancel an adult cannot.
At home: Your child talks about easy money online, or a side job found on social media.
This year's decisions
University entry for April 2027: the three selections, the common test, and the national fee standard
The general exam, 総合型選抜 (comprehensive selection) and 学校推薦型選抜 (school recommendation) run on different calendars, and the earlier rounds lean on what a student has built up by the final year.
Ask the teacher: Which kind of university selection do you think suits my child, and what should they be doing this year for it?
English-taught degrees and who may apply without a Japanese high-school diploma
English-taught degrees at Japanese universities run their own admissions, and the legal right to apply is a separate question from what each faculty asks.
JASSO grants before university: which residence status can apply, and what is paid
The JASSO 給付奨学金 (grant scholarship) is applied for through the high school before university, and residence status decides who may apply, so check it this year.
Ask the teacher: When does the school take applications for the JASSO grant, and who handles them?
