High school, year 3 (高校3年)

The third year of high school is the year of university applications, the common test, scholarship papers and, for some families, a change of residence status for the child. For the child it is also the year they become a legal adult, free to sign contracts and to vote, while some things stay barred until later.

Age 17–18

What school expects this year

  • High school: credits, moving up a year, and the 文系/理系 choice made in year 1

    高校の単位・進級(原級留置)と文系・理系の選択

Graduation needs every required credit, and a student short on attendance or a passing mark can be held back, 原級留置 (repeating the year), so check where your child stands before the last term.

Ask the teacher: Is my child short of any credit or attendance needed to graduate?

Body and mind this year

  • "How to send an SOS": what schools teach, and the lines a child or parent can call

    SOSの出し方に関する教育と、子供・保護者の相談窓口

The final year's decisions land on a teenager who is becoming an adult, and the lines in the article still take their calls, with some for parents too.

At home: Your child talks as if nothing after graduation is worth planning, or stops caring how exams go.

Friends, rules and screens

  • Turning 18 in high school: contracts, parental authority, voting, and what stays at 20

    18歳で成年に(契約・親権・選挙権と20歳のまま変わらないこと)

This is the year your child becomes a legal adult: phone, card, loan and rental contracts no longer need you, voting begins, and alcohol, tobacco and gambling stay barred until later.

At home: Your child signs up for something through a sales call, a friend or an app and then cannot get out of it.
